2021.12.08 19:44 ajs3423 Day 3
Not a huge accomplishment compared to a lot of posts I see on this sub but I'm happy with it. I really wanted to drink last night but I was able to fight the urge. I really didn't want to be hungover at work and I'm glad I wasn't. A coworker is going through their own struggles with not only booze but hard drugs too. I don't want to jeopardize my career especially when I see a promising future with this company. Seeing this person show up under the influence again was not only sad to see how this persons life is being so affected by their addictions but it also made me really think about how not being able to control myself is going to cause me to lose everything I work so hard to achieve. I have an appointment with a therapist next week to address my addiction issues and to deal with other issues im going through and I feel really good about taking that 1st step. IWNDWYT

2021.12.08 19:44 Alex_Portnoy007 Something Firefox should get more credit for
Clearing your cache ain't no big deal on Firefox. It's right under the History tab. You don't have to go into the settings menu, and from there to Security & Privacy before the option is even revealed - I'm looking at you, Chrome. You have to clear your cache from time to time - Firefox makes a necessary task easier.
Can you think of other things Firefox makes easier?

2021.12.08 19:44 cammelspit Can't decide on what DE I want
So, as some background, I do have experience using Linux in general. Mostly this experience I have revolves around the command line more than anything. I have an unraid server that I make do things it's probably not supposed to be doing and that bad boy is based on Slackware. I have also tried more than once to try and switch my main desktop over to primarily running Linux. In that sense, mostly I have run Ubuntu or go back farther than 2011 I used Mandriva and farther still when it was called Mandrake and if you go back even more to the first time I ever used Linux for fun it was I believe full-on RedHat. This time, on the other hand, Windows 11 has done it for me. I'm running a CPU that's just old enough that they have decided I shouldn't be able to run windows 11. My current windows 10 installation, as is typical, is starting to behave strangely. And I have decided that I will never again from this day forward install windows 10 bare metal on any machine that I intend to use. I have tried to do this before. Last time I lasted almost 4 months until I just had to go back to windows because the gaming simply wasn't up to my standards.
So here is my dilemma. I am what most people would probably call a power user. I'm comfortable in command lines, I'm comfortable with making things do what I want them to do no matter what. My limitations stop at scripting and software because I am no developer and I just don't know enough in that space to be able to make something from scratch. With all this in mind, the distribution that looks nice to me so far is garuda. The problem is, there are so many different desktop environments available for it. Yes, I know I could switch to another desktop environment if I hate the one that I'm starting with but that kind of defeats the purpose of trying to learn a new system if at the first sign of any kind of problem I drop it like a bad habit and switch to something else. Anyways, initially, I was intending on running KDE but after doing a lot more digging I've concluded that I'm probably not a big fan of some of the things that they do interface-wise. So looking through the pre-built images on the garuda main page I can see they also have cinnamon, just like Linux mint. Now I have had some dabbling in Linux mint with the cinnamon desktop environment and I quite like the way it looked and felt. I am, however, going to be running this on a quad-core system and not a very recent one at that, it is a 6600k with a TitanX (Maxwell). So I'm also thinking something lightweight like Xfce might be a good choice.
Gaming is a primary concern to me and so is doing fun things like mounting my encrypted cloud storage locally and such. My wine and son both at times use my PC. For the Wife, it's all about the browser. I actually intend to have proper google chrome installed JUST for her because that's what she knows and as long as that works the same way it does for her now, she will be happy. My son basically needs to be able to just click play on something in steam and have it just work. Thankfully that is supposed to be a lot more likely these days on Linux than it ever was in the past when I tried using Linux as a daily driver last time. All the other fancy stuff is solidly and exclusively for me and me alone. Though they do need to coexist on the same machine.
I also know this might not be the place and I may be asking too much out of my PC thing to begin with but I am VERY familiar with KVM virtual machines from my server so I do intend to have one set up for the odd time here and there I need to play something that will not run on Linux even through Proton or whatever other compatibility layers there are. I know there will likely be a performance hit and I'm okay with that since from what I have been able to read up on, it is literally only one game that I play will need this to get working so that's pretty neat.
TL;DR Weaker side PC, New user for desktop but not inexperienced, games on the regular but mostly Steam games. Don't know which DE to pick from.
Sidenote: I may be willing to entertain the idea of another distro entirely as well if you can come up with any other good recommendations but from what I can see, an Arch-based distro does seem like it would be right up my alley in terms of my love of tinkering and learning new things. Because my server runs Unraid and that uses Slackware, I actually spun up a Slackware VM just to have a play around with it and now I use that VM to do file management stuff on a full desktop just for fun instead of using something like a docker with Krusader or Dolphin installed. So if that put me into one category of a person over another, well, there you have it.

2021.12.08 19:44 Aylabear730 Am I Doomed for Organic Chem?
I’m looking ahead to next semester, and it appears that Bernhard Vogler is the only professor teaching Organic Chemistry. On Rate My Professor, he has a 2.8/5, with 4/5 difficulty, and only 13% would take him again, (this is with 32 reviews). I am a biology major, with a hopeful minor in chem. Any advice if you’ve taken him? Should I wait to take it until someone better is teaching it? Not trying to stress out over carbon molecules. Thanks!

2021.12.08 19:44 Consistent-Thing-416 How do I handle medical debt collectors?
(VA) So about 2 years ago I went to the hospital for alcohol poisoning about two years ago. I woke up and the hospital just made me sign a form and released me. While I left the hospital I was still intoxicated , but I guess I was ok to go home. They didn’t ask for my insurance. So now 2 years later my parents get a bill for this. Question 1) can I refute these charges? I have no idea what was done to me? The ambulance I was in was free through a college program? Can I reduce the charges? (The charges add up to 1.4k)
Question 2)My parents want to now know why I went to the hospital. I made sure to sign the form barring them from my medical history as soon as this happened. They now want me to give them permission to ask for it? Is there a way they can see the charges without seeing why I was at the hospital?
Any help would be awesome!

2021.12.08 19:44 blippyz Question about new book with yellowed pages
Hello. I bought a book on the Barnes and Noble website, and it arrived in mint condition, still shrinkwrapped, with the exception being that the top page edge is so yellow it looks like it's been out in the sun for decades. The other 2 page edges are still white and look brand new.
This is book 3 from a 5 book series and the other 4 were fine.
If I order another copy, is it likely it will come from the same shelf in the same warehouse, and probably have the same issue? I am not sure if it would be better to order another one or to just get it somewhere else instead.
