2021.10.25 20:36 Detective_Miller A Note to the Less Advantaged

This post is for the students who

I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to compete alongside students who have a wide array of (often undisclosed) advantages.
A word of advice -
Put your blinders on. Ignore the noise. Stay focused, and do the work.
Advantages are just that - advantages. They do not make or break your shot at getting in the industry.
I know it’s unfair. Life is unfair.
But, once you shift your focus to what you can control (versus the annoying things you cannot), you will go far.
Good luck.

2021.10.25 20:36 Plastic-Mixture9598 I (f22) have double booked a date (m23) and ex work colleagues for this Friday

So, I have been dating this guy for a few weeks and I really really like him! I think he has great boyfriend potential and I see it going further. Last week my ex work colleagues sent a message asking who is free for the 29th October, I said yes and they have booked for me to come out for dinner with them. This evening the guy I am dating asked what my plans are for this weekend, I said I might be going to a house party on Saturday to celebrate Halloween but I completely forgot about being busy on Friday so I said that if he wanted to we could see each other. A bit later on into the conversation we started discussing what we would do and he asked if I wanted to go out for dinner and I said yes, still forgetting I’ve already got plans. Shortly after, I remembered. I really really want to see my date and this is what I would rather do, but I also feel so bad for canceling on the work friends. Do I just say I’m sorry but I didn’t realise I double booked and can’t make dinner with work people or do I tell my date what happened and ask if he can meet up after? I would much rather just see my date and have a lovely time together as it would be quite far for me to get from the restaurant to his. The table with work friends is booked for 7pm so probably wouldn’t get to his until about 10pm and wouldn’t want to give him the impression that I just want sex.

2021.10.25 20:36 leoofalexandria The Town

You look weary. You've been traveling for a long time, haven't you. You already know what this place is. It's home. You've found what you've been looking for. You can have it all too, all you have to do is remember. This has always been where you belong. This place is yours. Just remember.
There's people here, your people. You still have your sanity, but we can tell that would not be for long. Let me show you the people who still have their energy. This is the town you were looking for. It's the perfect size for you. You'll remember. Let's take a walk.
You see the corner store, where you used to drop your bikes off outside with your friends as you all ran in to grab various candies. You always told Tom not to eat too much chocolate, but he never listened. At least you weren't the one with the belly aches later.
There's the Anderson bakery, where Mr. and Mrs. Anderson worked your entire life. You can smell the pastries now. Remember you used to leave off campus during lunch and buy an apple fritter the size of your head? You've never tasted anything like it, even up to this very moment. But it can be yours again, you just have to remember. Ignore the faint smell of ash. Ignore the mold. It only exists when you see it. Or think about it.
Speaking of school, you remember how many good memories you have? It can be yours again. Remember 7th grade when you met Rachel Van? She was the first girl that really liked you. You didn't know how much at the time. You'll remember. Remember you used to pass notes every single day? Waiting to read it on the bus on your way home. It was what you looked forward to all day. I wonder what Rachel is doing now. You can find out. She's here you know. In time I can show you to her. Wouldn't she be excited to see you? She still has her energy. Not like the outside. There's no escape from here, why would you ask?
We're all so old here. We need new blood like you. Someone to return this place to. The warm feeling you get right now will always be there. You don't ever need to be afraid again. You don't have to remember how it used to be. Just remember how it is. Stop being afraid. It's all over now, you've found the home you always needed. Ignore the mold. It isn't harmful if you don't think about it. There are only friends here. Remember that. Remember the light that always shined here. You were born here and will never die again here. Put your satchel down. There's no need for that anymore. Everything has been taken care of.
Don't go to the center of town. There is nothing there.
Keep looking forward. Here's the park. We had to move the gazebo; it was getting too hot. Other than that, you can remember what it used to look like. You would meet there before the movie. You have to remember to make it yours. The tivoli theatre used to show mold every Friday and Saturday. Movie. That's what I said.
The grass in the park was the greenest patch in the land. It wasn't diseased and yellow. That's just a trick. It can be yours again, like this entire place. Just remember. Every summer you would pack up the wagon and present at the market in that very park. Biggs was there. Freddy was there. You even met the Count. They're all still here somewhere. You'll meet them again. You'll meet every single one of them again. The town hasn't forgotten you, don't forget the town. Not one better place in the rooms exists. No pain, no hunger, no famine, no flames.
There's your friend's house. The one you used to ride bikes with until the lights turned red. He doesn't eat chocolate anymore. He doesn't eat anything anymore. Remember his parental would get you both pizza and let you watch regular scary movies? You'll remember. He may be harder to find, but you will. You'll find them all. We're so happy you found your home. This is the nicest home anyone can ask for.
Sometimes the mold appears when you don't think of it. This won't happen often anymore. The longer you stay. You're going to love it here. It's better than where you have been. You've been traveling for so long. Tattered clothes and bones showing through your skin. You only thought of death, and now you can think of life. You can see your people again. You don't need light. You don't need pain. Only if you want. Remember this place.
Let's keep moving. There's the statue we worsh- There’s the statue we erected outside of glorious city hall. You remember. The beast of the level. We tamed it. We learned from it. We remember. You remember. Oh, so many people aren’t lucky enough to live here. Why are you unhappy. No, there are no exits there.
There's the hardware store that old Jim works at. He gave you popcorn and let you take pop out of glass bottles for free while your father picked up supplies. Supplies for the bad time that are no longer needed. You don't need to remember that because it is long over. You need to remember the people of this place. You will become it. We need the young skin. It's getting so old here. Skin is a small price to pay for this beautiful place.
The only hotel in town. It was always well kept. No mold. People from all over town came. Important people. People not from town. I may be getting ahead of you. Don't remember that. The saloon next door was where your mother liked. You had your first glass of peach there, remember? You miss your mother, I know. You played on that gaming machine for hours there. You were never happier. Until right now. You'll remember.
There's your house. I know you didn't live here, but you did. It's the same house you lived in. Your unnamed siblings grew up there with you. You won't remember now. You will. With the town's help. You played together, read stories together, and laughed. You haven't laughed in a long have, have you. Father was at store and Mother was at saloon. They didn't know the mold used to be there. There is no mold anymore. All you have to do is forget the mold. The fire has also been moved. The center of town has been moved. There is nothing to see there. No doors, no exits, no burning hell.
Your neighbor's skin used to fall off if you looked at her. People buried their past near you. It's not like that here. The town has been preparing for you. All bad has been molded. All bad has been removed. Remember? Remember how nice the school was? Remember how nice the park was? Remember how nice the yard was?
They will be there when you die. They will be there when you mourn. I will be there when you die. I will be there when your family mourns. They are here though. It doesn’t have to be like this. Or that.
Do you see the activity field. You used to use it with your friends. You didn’t know at the time that you wouldn’t be doing this forever. No one told you. You can go back. You can keep your skin and quell the fire for the rest of eternity. No one told you it was over. The sky has gone light again. Remember. Remember how you felt doing the activity. There is no mold there. If you stop thinking about it, it will cease. The smell of burning light and smoke is not there anymore. This place, like all places will be yours. Hell. Hell. Hell. Hell.
01100100 01101111 00100000 01101110 01101111 01110100 00100000 01101100 01100101 01100001 01110110 01100101 00100000 01100100 01101111 00100000 01101110 01101111 01110100 00100000 01101100 01100101 01100001 01110110 01100101 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100011 01100001 01101110 01101110 01101111 01110100 00100000 01101100 01100101 01100001 01110110 01100101 00100000 01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01101000 01100101 01110010 01100101 00100000 01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01101110 01101111 01110100 00100000 01101000 01100101 01110010 01100101
Look in front of you. Do not look behind. Behind only will bring you pain. Pain is not here. The only thing behind you is the people. They will stand behind you if you remember. They will not be in the center. We surround the town. We will put you in the center. You will never be placed into the center.
This is the greatest place in the rooms. This is home. Smell the air, ignore the mold. There is no judgement here. There is no god here. You can be god here. We want you to remember this place, because it is you. You can control the mold and the rot. Your skin will forever be yours. But continue to ignore the mold. It does not exist here if you do not think about it. We’ve all become so grateful that you found the nicest place in existence.
There’s the corner store. Remember when you rode your bike there on a cold morning. The cold so cold it burned your skin and chapped your lips. Your friend died there trying to escape. You don’t have to remember that. It never happened.
The smell of blood comes from the Anderson bakery. Remember Mr. and Mrs. Anderson’s bright red eyes watching you as you passed by. You always loved the Andersons’ Eve fritters.
Speaking of original sin, there’s the school. Remember in 7th grade when you met Rachel Van? The spawn that actually liked your dreadful soul. She still does. You ingrate. I can show you to her. Her skin might not be on.
The center of town does not exist. Stop asking if there are any exits. Everyone is friendly here. Everyone is here for you. How many times do I have to tell you that this is your home. Everyone and everything will take care of you.
The park is coming up. Yes, YES it is yellow. But it can be green again with your help. All you have to do is stay and make it normal. The normal grass color. The gazebo had to be moved. It doesn’t matter where it went or what it leads to. You’ll never find it anyway. Can you feel the heat. I think you’ve been here long enough.
Shh. Please. Please, be quiet. I know you’ve been fighting this for so long. I’ve watched your every move since you’ve been here. Your skin is already lifting. There’s no use resisting anymore. Stop thinking of the mold. How many times did we have to tell you. You belong here. The center of town does not exist. The center of town does not exist.
Good.. good. Now look around. Look behind you. They are all there. The rust is slowly fading. Smell is fading. Thought is fading. Good. You’ve taken. You’ve remembered. This place is now your home as it always was. It wasn’t always, but it was. You are part of home. This place is your home. Welcome. Do you now have anything to say?
“I am home.”

2021.10.25 20:36 th3frozenpriest Tome of the Mind - Chapter 27

[first] [prev] [next]

“In here, please,” Ryllae Inaro said once they were clear of the docks. “We can speak without fear of eavesdroppers.”
She made an abrupt turn towards a huge three-story building facing the docks. It was a magnificent structure, with plenty of those fine arches and glass windows that signified the typical noble house. There was a small yard attached as well, with perfectly manicured hedges and flowers lining the path to the door. Ryllae’s attendant hurried forward to open the door, letting the Chancellor and her two guests file through before him.
There were two other figures in the entry hall who perked up at the Chancellor’s appearance, ready to serve whatever need she had. But she made a brief hand gesture dismissing them, and they retreated through a side door at once with bows, glancing curiously at the newcomers. Then the door closed with a soft click at the same time as the main door, and they were alone.
Immediately, Samuel felt an enchantment come to life on the doors, washing mana over the building, covering the floors, walls, and ceilings perfectly. He wasn’t sure if Tobi could sense the enchantment as well, but he figured so, as Tobi looked just as tense as himself.
“Worry not,” Ryllae said. “It is merely an enchantment to stop distant eyes and ears from prying.”
“What scrying do you have to fear?” Samuel asked with interest. “From what I understand, Zaban is not at war.”
“These precautions are not for enemies, but for allied,” she replied. “I stand in contrast to many of Zaban’s beliefs, and as such, I find it necessary.”
“How do you mean?”
“That will be explained in due time. Please, follow me.”
The Chancellor continued to lead her guests further into the house, passing through several smaller rooms and up a flight of stairs, eventually finding her way to an ornate office with a desk and chairs. There was beautiful artwork on the walls here, depicting the more rare moments in nature, and plenty of plant life thrived here, mostly flowers that he did not recognize. There was an alchemy bench in the far corner, hidden out of the way.
Samuel, as a student of observation, couldn’t help but notice that Ryllae’s stiff, upright demeanor changed subtly as they retreated further into the estate. Her formal air was slowly but surely relaxing, and her movements became less stiff. Once they crossed into her office, she let out a long breath as she settled into her chair, fully relaxed. This was very strange behavior, he thought.
“I do not enjoy the touch of modern civilization,” Ryllae said, gesturing for them to take seats across from her. “It is tiring, loud, and most of all, rank. Even in the more moderate Stormbreak Harbor, the senses are overwhelmed easily.”
And indeed, Samuel could notice a cleaner scent in the air in this building. Usually, with a large building such as this, a musty smell tended to hang about. But the mansion was home to a strange gentle breeze, keeping the air flowing while also cooling them off from the heat outside. Now that he was aware of the subtle effect of the breeze, he could feel himself relaxing as well.
“How could you tell that I’ve interacted with Grimr?” He asked at once. “It has been nearly two weeks since I last saw him. Surely his scent has washed off me by now.”
“It was an easy guess,” She replied. “I could tell at once that you are an Ancient. And as your ship came from Milagre, where there is only one other Ancient, it stood to reason that you have interacted with him.”
So she did not know about Longfang, he thought. Few people seemed to know of the young Ancient, he thought. That did track, as the white wolf was only a hundred years or so older than him, and had spent the majority of his life with Grimr and Shigeru. Grimr, meanwhile, was one of the oldest living Ancients, and had a powerful claim over the domain of Nature, so was more well-known.”
“So how can I help you?” Samuel asked after a short pause. “It’s clear you have some request to make of me.”
Ryllae smiled at him. “Quite. Based on your appearance, I would assume you were alive during the reign of Neratas. Am I correct?”
“Towards the end of it,” Samuel agreed. He chose not to mention that he’d fought the beast. “What of him?”
“Well, as you doubtless know, Neratas was overcome with corruption in his final years.”
Samuel nodded, the image of that massive black wolf looming in his mind momentarily. Even now, though he knew the beast was dead, he felt a shiver of fear crawl down his spine at the thought of Grimr’s elder brother. “Yes, I was aware. Is it corruption that you are dealing with? I don’t have the ability to cleanse corruption.”
“I am not sure,” she said with a thoughtful frown. “Whatever it is, it lies between the lakes. But the mages there are unwilling to share information. In addition, my people refuse to entertain such an idea in our nation, and I have been forbidden to leave my post.”
Samuel leaned forward in his chair, his elbows on his knee and resting his chin on his clasped hands. “Interesting. Still, if it is corruption, I cannot wipe it out. What do you expect of me?”
“I want you to find out exactly what it is. Report back to me, and, if necessary, you and I can call Grimr here to deal with it.”
“You want to summon a god?” Samuel asked with raised eyebrows. “That sounds impossible.”
“Not at all. All that would be required is a shrine for him to travel to. This is a divine ritual that has existed since the first gods came to be. But I am the only druid in all of Zaban that can perform it.”
“You’re the only one strong enough?” Tobi interjected. “I thought Zaban was filled with powerful druids?”
“It is,” Ryllae tilted her head towards Tobi. “But they still cling to the old ways.”
Tobi looked more confused at that answer, but Samuel finally understood her point. Suddenly, the purpose behind the protective enchantments made sense. It also went a long way towards explaining the Chancellor’s regards for her compatriots, and her fixation on Samuel’s connection to Grimr.
“They still worship Neratas,” he said bluntly. As Ryllae nodded, he leaned back in surprise. “They worship a corrupt god?”
Ryllae shook her head firmly, an irritated look crossing her face. “Neratas was not always corrupt. He was once a proud soul, and that is the entity they still acknowledge. They refuse to believe that he was ever corrupted, or that Grimr has taken his place.”
“I see,” Samuel said slowly. “Forgive my offense. There is much I do not understand.”
Ryllae made a quick gesture dismissing the need for apology. “But you see the situation I face. I cannot convince my compatriots of the truth, and their ignorance puts us all at risk. If there is indeed corruption, then it must be proven, and only an eyewitness can confirm its existence.”
“Let me guess,” Samuel put in quickly. “Your leaders have forbidden anyone from traveling to the center of the lakes to verify it.”
Ryllae did not say anything, but the look in her eyes confirmed his theory. He let out a long breath, thinking through the problem. He did know exactly what was required to cure corruption, as he had seen Grimr perform the feat with his own eyes. The only problem was that the feat was one only Grimr could reproduce, thanks to his unique trait. Just as Samuel could counter spells and reflect them back at the originator but not teach others how he could not learn Grimr’s ability.
“Very well,” he said. “I came here to meet the mages you mention and learn what I can from them, otherwise I would not involve myself in such a weighty affair.”
“Of course, I will reward your efforts,” Ryllae reassured him at once. “The druids of Zaban know many magicks, and I will teach them to you if you help us. I imagine that would interest you more than gold.”
“You are quite right,” he agreed. “I serve my own master, in a sense, and new knowledge is always welcome. For now, my companion and I will find some lodging for the night. In the morning, we will depart.”
The three of them stood then, and Ryllae offered them a deep bow, which they returned. “Thank you for your help, Archmage Bragg.”
“Please, just Samuel will do fine,” he replied. “I don’t like formalities.”
“I understand. Likewise, please, get some rest. I wish you well on your journey.”
They departed the Chancellor’s estate, heading further from the docks for a night’s rest. They found a simple tavern with free rooms, and, after a meal that was plain in the extreme, they went to their rooms. After more than a week on the constantly moving boat, Samuel found it difficult to sleep on a solid bed once more. But eventually, sleep claimed him.

2021.10.25 20:36 MrGoatKid Am I experiencing withdrawal?

I went on a bender for the last month and was drinking 15+ beers per day
I quit 2 days ago and constantly have the shakes and crippling anxiety. I was also doing drugs so I’m not sure if this is alcohol withdrawal or something else
Is crippling anxiety and depression/sense of doom part of alcohol withdrawal?
How long till it’s over?
Thanks

2021.10.25 20:36 MacTireAirgid I made my husband soup for dinner and wanted him to try it. That's when I saw his wedding ring in the pot, still attached to his finger.

My husband and I have not been doing well lately. In fact, as I write this, I realized we hadn't been doing well for a while.
We had our normal struggles, like every couple, but lately they had turned from bearable differences to utter annoyances. It didn't help we work long hours away from each other now. I've been so busy drowning in manuscripts to edit since my promotion last year. I spend 70 hours holed up in the attic we converted into my office when we moved to this small town, editing other people’s work. Helping them achieve their dreams of publishing their stories, while I waste away here.
We moved to this desolate farm home for his job. The university in the city had the best archeology program, but the worst cost of living. We could only afford to buy a run down farm outside of the city and since I can do my job at home, I gave up my dream home we bought when we first married.
He said it would only be for a few years, then we could move back. I was beginning to think otherwise as he spent more and more time at the school. He told me they found a potential dig site where they thought there would potentially be some huge discovery. I began to belive him less and less each time I smelled perfume on his shirts and found changes of clothes in his car.
He started to call me crazy. Told me the stories I have been reading are getting to my head. That I spend too much time alone and should make friends. But there is no one around to befriend, and he was suppose to be my best friend and support anyways.
We had once shared a dream of writing a book based on his research and digs. It had been a long time since we talked about that dream.
So when he told me he was going with his team to the site, in another country, to help them excavate what they thought was an undiscovered ancient tomb, I felt a ray of hope. I told him it would be a great start to our book, and he laughed at me. He told me the school would be publishing the findings in their own research paper. And his team would help him write it. I was hurt, but he told me to get over it and focus on my own work.
He had grown tired of my hours, apparently. He said he never saw me anymore and I felt like a stranger. In that moment I realized I felt the same way. He told me he would be back in three months, and I told him I wouldn't be there. Three months alone with nothing but my work sounded like hell.
That wasn't the first time he struck me, if I am being honest. He had hit me a few times before that, whenever I had brought up the perfume or the time I found another woman's panties in his car.
This was the first time he broke something though. I suppose it was my own fault, I had tried to crawl away and I knew better. Just let him get it out of his system, it's faster that way. But there was a look in his eyes that night I had not seen before. They burned with such hatred, I just had to get away. Maybe it was because I said I was going to leave. Maybe it was the beer he had with dinner. Either way, as I crawled out to the enclosed porch, he took the door and slammed my leg in it.
He brought me to the doctor the next day and I got a cast on. I said it was an accident, old farm house and all, slipped on the stairs. No one thought any wiser since everyone in town thought my husband was going to put them on the map with his upcoming dig.
If I am being honest I am sure he did it to make sure I couldn't leave.
He went on his trip, and I stayed at the farm with my never ending stacks of manuscripts. He called a few times, to up date me and let me know he scheduled an appointment with the town doctor to come take my cast off. The day before he was scheduled to come home.
The last time he called was to tell me they broke ground and expected to get into the tomb that week. I had heard the woman in the background calling for him on that call, and my silence told him so. I didn't hear from him the rest of the trip.
I wish I could say I left then, but I didn't. I stayed, scared of when he returned but even more afraid of what he would do if I left. I have no family, and no friends. He is the only person in my life. All I have is my work.
The day the doctor came to take of my cast I learned they had found what they were looking for. Apparently the whole town was talking about it. News crews were reporting the find all over the world. My husband was famous.
I waited for him to come home the next day. He had taken the car to the airport and left it there, so I could not pick him up.
I heard the tires roll down the drive, and my heart raced. I had made sure the house was spotless, and dinner ready. His favorite, hamburgers. He rarely ate anything else at home. My work had been done early today, so that all my attention could be on him.
house, which was strange. Suddenly he had appeared in the kitchen where I waited. I stood, startled, and gaped at him.
His hair was much longer, his face a bit gaunt. But it was his eyes that startled me. They seemed to burn as he gazed around the room. Not with the anger or annoyance I was use to seeing, but with actual light.
His gaze fell on me and I felt myself becoming small. I had no idea what he was going to do now.
"You made dinner." He sounded surprised, hopeful. I nodded. He smiled.
"Thank you." I felt my knees go weak at the look on his face. It was far different from any other he had ever given to me. And not once in our life together had he thanked me.
We ate and he asked about my day. We chatted and I found myself becoming less and less tense. He had changed somehow, though I couldn't put into words how or why.
That night as we got into bed, I watched as he blushed as we got under the covers. He seemed nervous, almost boyish as he wrapped his arms around me. I melted into his embrace, unlike anytime before.
Weeks went by like this, with the occasional visitor asking about the dig. TV crews came asking for interviews, and students came looking for support. Apparently he had been offered a lot of money from the school, since one of these days he asked me if I would like to quit my job.
"We can work on that book we always planned on doing. I found so much there, and I want the world to know."
I couldn't believe it. I hesitated, and saw he saw. I braced for his wrath, but only received his warmth.
I eventually agreed, and we started working on our book. He gave me his findings, and went over the dig. They had found the resting place of a lost Pharaoh. They once thought he was just a rumor, a tale to tell kids at night. It was said he had been cursed, and if ever he was found he would bring destruction to the land we walked on.
"All superstitions." He told me. All they found was gold, and lots of ancient texts that hinted at what life was like back then. "These are the first texts we have found, intact, and complete. They tell the real story. He wasn't cursed, but he had power beyond belief. If he ever walked the lands again, he would rule yes, but with benevolence." I remember thinking to myself that most rulers thought that of themselves. I almost commented on it, but I saw the look in eyes as he poured over the material and I knew better. Let him believe the cursed king was nice, I thought.
We spent months pouring over the information, with him filling in the blanks every now and then. By the time we finished, I knew we had a prize winner on our table.
I wanted to celebrate with a feast, but since we had spent so much time writing we hadn't gone to the store in weeks. I scrounge around the freezer and came up with some meat and vegetables to make a stew. We had so much meat now that he had stopped asking for hamburgers ever since coming home.
while. The entire time I couldn't help but think how happy I was now. Whatever had happened on his trip and been enough to change him. We even started talking about moving back to the city.
I took a sip of my soup, and smiled. Whatever I had grabbed from the freezer tasted delicious. I spooned some in a small bowl to bring to him to taste. That's when I saw the finger floating among the vegetables.
It looked shrunken and grey, but the ring around it was unmistakable. It was my husband's wedding ring.
I stood there, staring at it, until I felt him behind me. I turned to see him, his eyes burning as he saw what I held. I thought of my husband, my real husband, and the horrors I had been through, and I shuddered. I thought of all the possibilities of what could have happened to my husband that would cause his finger to be in my soup. I felt nothing.
The thing before me was waiting, patiently, to see what I would do. I plucked the finger from the pot, slipping the wedding ring off and tossing the finger in the trash. I approached the thing that wore my husbands' skin and grasped its- his- hand.
"Dinner will be ready soon." I said, holding its gaze as I slid the ring on its finger.
It has been a few days since then, and we have no mentioned it to each other. I asked it to clean out the freezer and buy some fresh meat. Where he threw the contents away, I do not know nor will I ask. We
Late at night I often wonder what it looks like beneath my husbands' flesh. Often times I wonder if the flesh will infect the thing and somehow my real husband will return like some kind of virus. On those nights I lay awake, shivering in fear of the past and what could come if that happens. But always, the thing from the desert who wears his skin holds me, and I know I am safe. For now, the curse of the king stays with me and has not extended past my farm. For now.
